Not always. Depending on the layout of your home, we can sometimes use surface trunking or localised chasing rather than opening everything up. When the electrics are redone as part of a larger renovation, we coordinate the chasing with the other work for a clean result and no needless damage.

Start with where you expect to place furniture and appliances, and how you will use each area, such as a kitchen, desk, bedside or reading corner. Even a simple plan helps explain your priorities. The existing installation then needs to be assessed: the number of sockets you want does not determine the full scope of work.

These should be identified separately from the electrical installation. Explain whether you will supply the light fittings, whether installation is required and the finish you expect afterwards. Filling openings, preparing walls and painting may be separate items, so check that the quote states how far making good will go.
