Painting quotes in Luxembourg: what should I check?

Compare painting quotes by the surfaces, preparation and finishes included, rather than the apartment’s floor area alone. For your Luxembourg home, ask for the walls, ceilings and woodwork to be identified, along with furniture protection and any repairs. You can then see what each offer actually covers.

Before you start

  • Floor area is different from the area to be painted.
  • Ask what repairs and preparation are included.
  • Check the total for paint, protection, finishing and VAT.

My apartment is 70 m²: how much needs painting?

For a rectangular room, multiply the wall perimeter by the height. A flat ceiling is its length multiplied by its width. Note the doors and windows too. Ask whether the quote deducts these openings and how painting around their frames is charged; companies may present these measurements differently.

Let’s take a simple example: a room measuring 4 × 3 m with a height of 2.5 m has 12 m² of floor area. Before deducting openings, its walls total 35 m² and its ceiling 12 m², giving 47 m² of surfaces to assess. The example assumes four straight walls and a flat ceiling.

Why is a price per square metre not enough to compare quotes?

Ask what the price per square metre refers to: floor area, painted area or an estimate for the whole room. Then ask for the quantity and total. A wall that needs old paper removed and repairs made is a different job from repainting a sound surface.

Have walls, ceilings, doors and other woodwork listed separately, including anything you do not want painted. The number of coats should be clear as well as the area being painted. The amount of paint needed depends on the product’s stated coverage; the Tollens calculator explains this distinction.

Are holes and cracks included in the painting quote?

Show the painter holes, cracks, marks and old finishes. Ask what the price covers: removing wallpaper, filling small holes, repairing plaster, sanding or applying a primer. A line that simply says ‘paint walls’ may leave these jobs unclear.

If a damp mark keeps returning, ask why before agreeing to paint over it. Also mention any sockets or lights you want moved, so wall repairs can be planned before the final painting. Only include electrical work if it is part of what you need.

What should we agree before painting starts?

Say which colours and finishes you have in mind for each room. If you are unsure, look at a sample in the room’s own light. Have the agreed product, finish and surfaces written into the quote, including any paint you plan to buy yourself.

Ask who covers the floor, moves furniture, takes items down and puts them back. Check whether the price includes touching up around skirting or new doors and clearing away at the end. Extras should be listed separately so you can choose them before work starts.

Can I stay at home while the work is done?

Discuss this room by room. Say where you need to sleep and work, which furniture is too heavy for you to move and whether there is another room where it can go. Ask when each room can be used again with the paint being chosen. Floor area alone does not tell you how many days you will be without a room.

For a home in Luxembourg City, Esch or Differdange, share the address privately and describe the stairs, lift and access. Say when you can let workers in. If you have a key handover or move planned, give that date and ask whether it is realistic before making arrangements around it.

What should I send you for a painting quote?

Start with the town, country, number of rooms and a few photos. Say whether you want walls only, walls and ceilings, or repairs followed by painting. Include the floor area if you know it, making clear that it is the floor measurement. You do not need to measure every wall before contacting us.
